Flagship practice

Agentic AI NetOps is not a chatbot.

It is a governed operational system where agents reason, workflows control execution, and trusted network tools perform deterministic actions. Most agentic AI pitches stop at the demo. The hard part is the governance that lets it run in production.

Design principles

01

Intent-driven

Operate from service and network intent, not raw CLI prompts.

02

Human-governed

Approval by risk level, with an auditable delegation chain.

03

Tool-executed

Source of truth, controllers, ITSM and automation tools carry out the action.

04

Closed-loop

Every task completes a full cycle and feeds what it learned back in.

The loop

Agents decide what should happen. Workflows decide how it happens.

That boundary is the whole design. Reasoning stays flexible; production action stays deterministic, approved and reversible.

Governance

Five levels of autonomy, each with its own control requirement.

Enterprise acceptance does not come from better models. It comes from explicit authority levels, evidence and rollback. This is the table a risk committee will ask for, and the one worth agreeing before the first agent is deployed.

LevelAuthorityPermitted scopeControl requirement
L0 ObserveRead onlyCollect data, summarise, answer questionsNo approval
L1 AdviseRecommendationRoot cause, impact analysis, remediation proposalEngineer reviews
L2 PlanChange planWorkflow draft, pre-checks, risk scoreTechnical approval
L3 ExecuteControlled actionOrchestrated transaction, controller action, ITSM updateNamed human approval
L4 Closed loopLow-risk autonomousPre-approved fixes inside a policy envelopePolicy and audit evidence

No estate starts at L4. Most should not get there for years, and only for scenarios that have been certified individually. The value of the ladder is that it lets an organisation adopt agentic operations at L1 today without arguing about L4.

The agent workforce

Coordinators, specialists, and the guardrails around both.

Top-level agents coordinate. Specialist agents use approved tools only. A management plane makes every agent registered, versioned, permissioned and observable, which is what prevents shadow agents appearing in production.

Supervisor

Receives intent, delegates work, manages the outcome

Planner

Creates the task plan, dependencies and success criteria

Workflow

Launches the deterministic process and approvals

Guardrail

Checks policy, risk, scope and forbidden actions

Incident and RCA

Correlates events and establishes root cause

Change and provisioning

Drafts and executes controlled change

Assurance and optimisation

Watches service health and tunes it

Compliance and security

Checks posture and control drift

Adoption

Four phases, in this order.

Every phase is useful on its own. None of them requires committing to the next.

1Foundation

Agent platform, tool gateway, source-of-truth and observability integrations, read-only agents.

2Assisted NetOps

Root cause, assurance, documentation and compliance agents making recommendations with a human in the loop.

3Controlled execution

Workflow-driven changes through the orchestrator and controllers, with approval and rollback.

4Closed-loop safe zones

Low-risk autonomous remediation, for certified scenarios only.
